What is a District of Innovation?
The District of Innovation concept was passed into law by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842. The law allows traditional independent school districts to access most of the flexibilities available to the state's open enrollment charter schools. To access these flexibilities, a school district must adopt an innovation plan, as set forth in Chapter 12A.
On May 3, 2016, the Lake Park School District’s Board of Trustees passed a resolution to initiate the process of designation as a District of Innovation in order to increase local control over district operations and to support innovation and local initiatives to improve educational outcomes for the benefit of students and the community. On July 21, 2016, the board appointed a thirteen member Local Innovation Committee comprised of district leaders representing a variety of roles and responsibilities to develop the Local Innovation Plan, which was presented to the board and approved on November 15, 2016.
The term of the plan is for five years, beginning January 1, 2017 and ending January 1, 2022, unless terminated or amended earlier by the Board of Trustees in accordance with the law. The committee will monitor the effectiveness of the plan and recommend to the board suggested modifications. The board and district administration have followed the guidelines of the State Education Agency. Components of the plan are listed below.
- Minimum minutes of instruction
- Minimum attendance for class credit
- First day of Instruction
- Teacher certification for Career and Technical Education instructors
- Teacher appraisals

Why do the Lake Park Public Schools have such a strict attendance policy?
All Lake Park Public Schools parents are encouraged to have their children be present at school daily. The district believes that students can only be educated and learn at high levels when they are present and participating in the classroom each day. Federal and state governments also have requirements for student attendance. Current responsibility measures demand high attendance for all of our students to become triumphant and able to take part in a worldwide economy upon graduation.

What is Lake Park Public Schools doing to ensure up-to-date and adequate technology resources within the schools?
The LPSD Chief Information Officer (CIO) has mandated the development of a ‘customer service’ strategic plan. One of the core goals of the plan is to address the customer perception of equipment within the district. The plan includes an IT Council – Adopt-a-Site, customer surveys and representation at major meetings. The key part, however, is the re-configuration of the department’s technical support team and reallocation of current resources to ensure enhanced coverage in all of our schools.
