Chemistry is the "central science" that it touches on all the other sciences from biology to physics. This course covers the basics of chemistry, from its history as a scientific discipline to the nature of atoms and compounds to state changes through the Periodic Table and chemical reactions. This survey course provides students with a baseline understanding of  Chemistry is the study of change, and to understand how things change, we need to also understand how things are made- their internal properties. Chemistry provides explanations to questions such as: What happens when the temperature of water molecules falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit? Please refer to our general class overview handout.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, students will have learned:

  • A Brief History of the Science of Chemistry
  • **Basics of Scientific Method
  • How Atoms become Compounds
  • Elements in the Periodic Table and how to read the table
  • Differences between Acids and Bases
  • How Chemical Bonds work and what they do
  • What causes Chemical Reactions to occur and their effects
